The International Institute for Species Exploration and San Francisco State University announced the discovery in an email on Friday, naming the new species Paracledo mirabilis.

The spider is named for the mirabilis, meaning marvel in Spanish, of the spider's web.

Web-crawling spiders are common on the edge of rainforests. But this particular species is exceptional because of the incredible spiraled structures it builds, said Steven Hebert, an arachnologist who led the study.

He said the new spider typically builds angled criss-crossing frameworks on trees -- called orb webs -- but the spider's web is difficult to see on the ground. "This type of web is strange and remarkable to see from an airplane as you fly over it," he said.

The spider's webs are so well-known that's it can be seen on Google Earth. "It's a hotspot," Hebert said. "We see it flying in and out of its home range all the time."

He said it's not yet clear why these spiders build such unusual webs. "Why these spiders leave behind such intricate and beautiful webs is still a mystery," he said. "They don't spin them as well as other spiders, maybe they're just building them for display. But why would they build them from the air? That's what we don't know."

In the two years he's been studying the spider, Hebert said they've seen it only 30 to 50 times. But when he's seen it, it has never failed to reveal a surprise. The latest was a female spider that was seen spinning a male's web.
