We evaluated blood loss during laparoscopic cholecystectomy using six different techniques. Seventy-two patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy during the period April 1994-January 1995 were included in this study. We compared the blood loss during laparoscopic cholecystectomy using six different techniques: the Alexis, Kocher, Veress, camera-trocar and robot trocar (Da Vinci) techniques. Demographic characteristics and intraoperative findings were obtained. Preoperative coagulation profiles, operative time, perioperative complications, and hospital stay were also evaluated. We performed six (10%) trocar conversions. Blood loss was 37 +/- 25 cc for the Alexis, 146 +/- 120 cc for the Veress, 277 +/- 212 cc for the Kocher, and 479 +/- 346 cc for the camera-trocar technique. The mean blood loss for the robot trocar was not different from that for the camera-trocar technique. Patient age, body weight, operative time, and perioperative complications were not different between the groups. There was no difference in postoperative hospital stay among the groups. Mean operating room costs were $3,655 +/- 247 for the Alexis, $4,534 +/- 634 for the Veress, $3,664 +/- 473 for the Kocher, $4,848 +/- 873 for the camera-trocar, and $4,322 +/- 596 for the robot trocar.
